Project Story
This American Shingle-style manor reveals itself slowly, enticing visitors to come closer to see it in its full glory. “This is just the way the owners planned it – a secluded weekend retreat set atop a verdant hill” says interior designer Mark Christofi, who is based in North Reading, Mass. “And it fits in beautifully in this wonderful, picturesque old New England town. Nobody even knows that it is here—it really belongs in this wilderness.”
Christofi aimed to make the three-story manor comfortable, practical and easy to live in, designing spaces to have a “clean Arts and Crafts approach with touches of Americana.” The woodwork is quarter-sawn oak and the living room floors are made of vintage barn planks, complete with old nail and burn holes. The two fireplaces have a substantial feel as they are built from local fieldstone. Throughout the house horse motifs pay tribute to the owners’ stable in their estate in suburban Boston. While traditional pieces furnish the manor Christofi also brings in playful elements “I wanted to reinforce the architecture and bring the style that was being established into the home,” Christofi says. “And I wanted to keep things lighthearted but in a serious, traditional tone- I didn’t want it to be brown Boston.”
